Am I getting the best audio from my home theater system?
I have several game systems (PS3, Wii, PS2) connected to my DVD recorder through the normal 2 channel red and white audio cables. Then that DVD recorder is connected to my Home Theater System through an optical digital audio cable. I get surround sound from them all just fine, but I'm wondering if I'm getting the best audio from them or if I should get an optical audio switcher and connect them individually. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
If you want true surround, with 5.1 discrete channels of audio, then you have to use digital audio connections (either optical TOSLINK or coaxial RCA) between each of your devices and the home theater receiver. So if it were me, I would get the switcher.
The red and white RCA connections are 2.0 stereo analog and don't support 5.1 channels. The receiver can matrix 2.0 stereo audio into 5.1 speakers, which is like spreading the audio around but not separating it. There is a chance that the receiver is able to apply Dolby Pro Logic processing to the stereo audio (it creates a single rear channel for the rear surrounds), but that is still not quite as good as digital 5.1.
